Shifting the setting to Hong Kong in 2056 helps immensely, as it allows the series to both recall 80s cyberpunk masterpieces like Neuromancer and to escape its own increasingly predictable and bare-bones dystopian trappings. This is a world where people eke out their lives on barges and where the ramshackle dangers of Kowloon Walled City still exist, and it allows Shadowrun Hong Kong to feel different without major changes to the gameplay. In a series rife with magic, the setting lets Shadowrun to embrace Asian forms of mysticism, right down to quests where you re expected to mess with a company s feng shui and cause its workers to perform poorly. It runs the danger of becoming a tad too silly for its own good, yes, but Harebrained take special care to balance these moments with alternatives such as genuinely haunting scenes of slum folk driven near to insanity by mysterious nightmares. Shadowrun Hong Kong manages to feel different without major changes to the gameplay. All of this makes for a memorable if text-heavy story and in spirit, at least the combination of the attractive setting and quality writing leads me to like it more than what I saw in either vanilla Shadowrun Returns or last year s Dragonfall. Even in the briefest interactions, the writing involved reads like something you d get from a studio 10 times Harebrained s size. Elsewhere, its central premise of a fairly ordinary troll in my case, at least who gets caught up in the underworld after getting framed makes a little more sense in the context of learning new skills than the previous games insinuation that you d been shadowrunning for years. The setup leaves a good impression that lasts for hours, but alas, it erodes ever so slightly as the roughly 15 hours of gameplay march by. For one, Shadowrun Hong Kong runs the danger of falling into yet another chosen one story while also sharing a bit too many thematic similarities with Dragonfall; for another, its large, sprawling isometric environments strive too eagerly for the semblance of an open world. It loses some of its focus in the process. In fact, aside from the strong focus on the main storyline at the beginning and ending, much of my time seemed devoted to side-quests and roaming, which seems a little sad after the tightly crafted stories from Harebrained s previous efforts. A bad day for rats. Granted, the writing excels even in the side quests, but much of Hong Kong s core story nevertheless lacks a certain spark. The comparative deficiencies reveal themselves most in the companions, whose predictable characterizations generally lack the appeal of Dragonfall s Eiger or Glory despite the pages of pages of text and dialogue options that went into crafting their backstories. The one exception is a red samurai ghoul named Gaichu, and it s possible we wouldn t even have had him had the Kickstarter campaign not reached its particular stretch goal funding. Building a Better Matrix. I can t say I was ever exactly bored, though, and I suspect I have Shadowrun Hong Kong s many little improvements to thank for that. They re everywhere, and a quick trip I took into Harebrained s original Shadowrun from 2013 felt frustrating and unfulfilling after getting used to them. The interface has improved, and it s now easier to perform tasks such as switching out items among party members. Decking Shadowrun s hip term for hooking up to the Matrix has dramatically improved, as it s now possible to get through the relevant stages without fighting on account of some light stealth elements. Before, you had to fight it out. With Hong Kong, there s some tension to certain would-be encounters, which marks a vast improvement over the comparative tediousness of previous versions of the Matrix. Not the Matrix I remember. The core XCOM-style tactical combat is also harder this time around, and I love it. Some striking exceptions exist, though, including an underwhelming final boss fight. Being rather cavalier about my positioning, I almost got one of my three starting characters killed in the first combat encounter on the normal mode, and as for the hard mode. It rightfully lives up to its name. That s never a problem, though, as the turn-based tactical combat itself has never worked so well as it does here. The catch is that almost nothing has changed about it aside from the aforementioned ability to stealth past some encounters, but the improvements to character abilities like magic and decking are generally enough to quell desires for new features. Other options help, too, such as the ability to start the tactical combat before enemies see you in order to coordinate surprise attacks. The one area where newcomers might run into a bit of trouble is in Shadowrun Hong Kong s obvious assumption that you re already familiar with this type of gameplay and Shadowrun s own stat and leveling conventions, but to Harebrained s great credit, it s not too difficult to pick up. The Verdict. Shadowrun Hong Kong doesn t change much about the core gameplay experience that developer Harebrained Schemes has given us for three years now, but it makes up for it with a quality tactical RPG that s challenging, well-written, and filled with memorable visuals and audio. What makes it worse or better is that Magic is back, see, the world s mojo runs in 5000 year cycles and the last 5000 years up till 2000AD have been a low ebb called The Fifth World, we re now in The Sixth World for all the good that does us, kids get born as Orcs, Trolls, Dwarves, Elves or regular humans, all of which get lumped into the new group named Metahumanity and some are born with the power to control the ever growing flow of mana in the world. Outside of humans we have dragons returning and lording over people, buying corps and doing what dragons do as well as things in the Astral reals and the deep corners of The Matrix this setting s version of The Internet, only, not 2d but VR subtly manipulating things to their own ends. Main campaign Kind of a letdown, linear and mostly there to show off the setting and let the PC meet a load of insanely important in universe characters, however, it does tie into the main universe s plot somewhat well and it s definitely gripping in a way. I d give it a 7. 5 10 if I was pressed. Strengths First game of the series, some excellent tools for modders and they made damn good use of them, From The Shadows, Run is a spectacular work. Main campaign Set in the anarchist Berlin you get to experience a much more open ended and classic feeling Shadowrun experience than Returns s main campaign. better in every way, better level design, better characters, better gameplay. It s what a lot of people would call the quintessential game from this studio. Strengths Your runners are a team that you get to interact with between missions, and they are fantastic as an array of characters in this setting should be. Weaknesses It doesn t really innovate much in the underlying mechanics from Returns, the hub area is nice, as is the better characterization. Main campaign A much weirder campaign than Returns and Dragonfall, esoteric astral happenings, nutty megacorp conspiracies and some concepts unique to the Hong Kong setting that I REALLY don t spoil. It s characters are either better than or worse than Dragonfall s companions, some are excellent while others spend most of their time just explaining why they happen to exist in the setting. It s still brilliant but if you are expecting Another Dragonfall , don t. It s really similar in some ways, but different enough that you will regret if it you expect more of the same. Strengths They completely reworked how Decking works, pay attention to it if you decide to play it, they also reworked a few other things but nothing as serious as the utter overhaul that Decking got. Some love the change, some don t. But it s definitely a change and I personally prefer it. Weaknesses The characters aren t quite as fleshed out as Dragonfall s were but then it s a bit more hit and miss all around, some hub characters that you expect to have different things to say every time you pop in after a run just end up having 3-4 different parts and so you can easily run out of that extra plot stuff going on before getting near to completing the main plot. I would have been happy if this video caused only 1 all nighter but sadly that wasn t the case. Still Shadowrun provides plenty of subject matter to talk about so it was a pleasure at the end of the day. Oh and any type of feedback is welcome of course. I enjoyed Hong Kong. I didn t enjoy it as much as dragonfall but that s no criticism. For me the updated cyberware was the best new system. I was a little disappointed with the matrix tbh. I thought the story was ok. I don t think the mystery lived up to its potential and it ended up being a little too simple. The crew was good and felt real. I liked the exploration of rakters psychology. I liked the talking missions and the fact that the developer had the courage to include them. It s an investment in the player enjoying putting some thought in. Overall, I liked it and am looking forward o the expansion. I hope there s another but appreciate that it all depends on sales. I wouldn t say that Melee Combat Unarmed is useless - as with all of the Shadowrun games, it s once you get to Cleave Roundhouse Kick that you reap the benefits, as you can hit more than one person at once. Each weapon has its benefits - Rifles, of course, are very cost-effective, but Pistols get both extra hits and spread-out damage, Shotguns get innate spread-out damage, SMGs get innate extra hits though very little in terms of accuracy , and Edged weapons deal AP damage with nearly every hit, which with Cleave means you can knock out several people at once. Just saying. Anyways - kinda miffed that you could prepare for combat in meatspace but Matrix suddenly ended up being free-range, relying on reflexes and timing. Couldn t care much about the Simon-esque method to hack Blocker ICs, but most of the time it felt like brute-force was the better way to conquer the Matrix hubs, rather than finesse. That s really bad, because you were pretty much brute-forcing your way, and with the insane cooldown of Suppression, combined with the oddity of how turns progress making that cooldown even longer and Watcher ICs ALWAYS locking on you, it meant you always trigger the Matrix alarm. Then again, having the Matrix go on active alarm more often than not felt like the right way to go, since that way even the Blocker ICs could be simply destroyed; once they were gone, you didn t have any other opposition. Perhaps a combination of the previous and new Matrix, and figuring what s good between the two, might help. Have free-form walking, but be capable of changing into turn-based to avoid the Watchers or keep it free-form in case you like it. , plus the ability to jack off the Matrix almost anywhere. Also, keep both all three, if you consider Prosperity Tower s sculpted system. Matrix layouts and songs, and maybe add one or two more songs to give variety to the Matrix itself. As for anything else. since my first play is ALWAYS with a MysAd, I couldn t deal with the cyberware, but I m a HUUUUGE fan of the Magnet Arm it s so cool to surround everyone around Duncan and have all grenades land on him, then get thrown back.
